Mitchell County was established from Baker County, becoming the 123rd county in the state. There is some debate as to who the county was named after, with some sources suggesting it was named in honor of David Brydie Mitchell, the 27th Governor of Georgia, while others propose it was named after Henry Mitchell, a general in the Revolutionary War.
