CITIES : Bainbridge, Brinson, Climax, Attapulgus
Decatur County was established by the Georgia General Assembly on December 8, 1823, after being separated from a section of Early County. Over time, three other counties were carved out of land that was originally a part of Decatur County. Thomas County was created in 1825 using a part of Decatur. Grady County was formed in 1905 with another section of Decatur, while Seminole County was created in 1920 using the western portion of Decatur County. The county is named after Stephen Decatur, a United States Navy Commodore who was recognized as a hero during the War of 1812.
