Early County

COUNTY SEAT : Blakely, Georgia

CITIES : Blakely, Jakin, Damascus

Early County was established on December 15, 1818 and named after Peter Early, who was the 28th Governor of Georgia. It is situated on the western side of the Chattahoochee River, which serves as the boundary between Georgia and Alabama. Early County boasts several attractions that preserve prehistoric and nineteenth-century history. One of the most notable sights is the Kolomoki Mounds, which is a park that safeguards significant earthworks constructed by the Woodland culture's native people over 1700 years ago, from 350 CE to 600 CE. With its burial and ceremonial mounds, this is the largest mound complex in Georgia and one of the most extensive in the United States. The mounds' placement reflects the ancient people's beliefs about the universe, as they are aligned with the sun during the spring equinox and summer solstice
