Lee County was founded in 1825 and is part of the Albany, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Georgia General Assembly set the county boundaries on June 9, but the county wasn't named until December 14, 1826. It was named in honor of Henry Lee III, also known as "Light-Horse Harry," who was the father of Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
