COUNTY SEAT : Camilla, Georgia

CITIES : Camilla, Baconton, Pelham, Sale City

On December 21, 1857, Mitchell County was established from Baker County, becoming the 123rd county in the state. There is some debate as to who the county was named after, with some sources suggesting it was named in honor of David Brydie Mitchell, the 27th Governor of Georgia, while others propose it was named after Henry Mitchell, a general in the Revolutionary War. However, it is most likely that the county was named after General Henry Mitchell, as a marker outside the Mitchell County Courthouse indicates. According to the Georgia Laws of 1857 (pages 38-40) that created Mitchell County, it was named in honor of Gen. Henry Mitchell. The majority of Mitchell County is situated in the Lower Flint River sub-basin of the ACF River Basin (Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin).
