The county seat and only city is Newton, which was established on December 12th, 1825 from the eastern portion of Early County. The county is named after Colonel John Baker, an American Revolutionary War hero. It's also part of the Albany, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. If you're interested in history, the Baker County The Courthouse has been included in the National Register of Historic Places.Additionally, Notchaway Baptist Church and Cemetery, Pine Bloom Plantation, and Tarver Plantation in Newton are also on the register.
