Terrell County is a part of the Albany, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was created through an act of the Georgia General Assembly on February 16, 1856, using portions of Randolph and Lee Counties. The county is named after Dr. William Terrell, who hailed from Sparta, Georgia and served in both the Georgia General Assembly and the United States House of Representatives. During the American Civil War, a refugee settlement was set up in Terrell County to provide shelter for civilians who were displaced after the Union capture of Atlanta.
