On December 23, 1825, the Georgia General Assembly created Thomas County by taking parts of Decatur and Irwin Counties. Some of the lands within Thomas County's original borders were also used to create Colquitt (1856), Brooks (1858), and Grady (1905) Counties. The county was named after Jett Thomas, a War of 1812 officer who oversaw the construction of the first building at the University of Georgia (originally called Franklin College) and the state capital in Milledgeville.
